Research

Our Vision

Our cluster’s central theme is the prevention of AMR through a One Health approach, integrating human, animal (including livestock, aquaculture and companion animals), and environmental health perspectives – with the ultimate goal of creating a research framework to enable impact on policy. We will apply lessons learned from BC and share them in a collaborative exchange with others nationally and globally, while applying lessons learned abroad to address local challenges.

Our cluster seeks to advance research in the following five themes:

Five themes circulating

Surveillance and early detection with icon of a magnifying glass

Surveillance and Early Detection

Developing and deploying advanced tools for monitoring AMR pathogens in humans, animals, and the environment. This includes genomic surveillance, predictive modelling, and research to develop approaches that enable earlier identification of emerging resistance trends, which will facilitate earlier intervention.

Prevention Strategies

Exploring interventions such as vaccines, and improved antimicrobial stewardship programs in the community to reduce the overuse and misuse of antibiotics in healthcare, agriculture, and aquaculture.

Environmental Pathways

Investigating how antimicrobial agents and resistant pathogens spread through water, soil, and air, and identifying strategies to mitigate environmental contamination, for example via wastewater surveillance.

Policy and Public Health Impact

Assessing the effectiveness of AMR-related policies, informing evidence-based decision-making, and fostering international cooperation to combat AMR on a global scale.

Equity and Access

Addressing disparities in access to effective antibiotics, diagnostics, and preventive measures across diverse populations, emphasizing equity in both research and outcomes. While EDI will be incorporated across all cluster activities, individuals working in this theme will also help provide expert guidance on best EDI practices for cluster activities.
